Q&A: White Reaper

We Are Unseen caught up with Kentucky rockers White Reaper on their August/September UK tour!

How did White Reaper come into existence?
We’d all been friends for a really long time, and we played in a bunch of bands together since we were about 14, finally we ended up making a band that we decided to stick with and take on tour.

Where did that name come from?

The name was stolen off of the price tag of a halloween decoration.

Where does your musical influence come from?

All kinds of stuff. We like Kiss, T. Rex, Black Sabbath, Dead Boys, just to name a few.

Do you all like the same bands/artists? Are there any that one of you loves and the others just don’t get?

We mostly like the same stuff, but everybody also has their own shit that only they like. Nick really likes Pink Floyd, Sam likes Stereolab, just stuff like that.

You recently released your debut album, ‘White Reaper Does It Again’. How has the reception been, in your opinion?

Pretty alright I’d say.

How does this release compare to what you’ve put out before?

More people give a s**t about this one.

Your recent single ‘Pills’ has an entertaining, offbeat video. Was it inspired at all by any of you real life experiences?

Could be.

You recently toured with Electric Six. How was that? Are they as much fun as their music suggests?

Electric Six were really super duper nice guys and they took us to some towns we’d never played before.

Do any of you have any particular pre-gig rituals?

We listen to really loud music and we just sit inside of the van with bed sheets pulled over our faces so nobody fucks with us.

How is the UK treating you on this tour?

UK is treating us very nicely.

Had any of you been to the UK before? Any of you played over here?

Nick & Sam have family in the UK so they’ve been before, but this the first time touring here for all of us.

You recently played a gig in the hometown of We Are Unseen: Sheffield (August 31st)! How was that show?

Sheffield was fun, much better than York.

Are you looking forward to the London shows? How did you manage to end up playing the capital twice?

Yeah we’re definitely looking forward to the London shows, they seem like they’ll be a lot of fun.

What’s your favourite aspect of British culture?

Ozzy Osbourne.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Full US tour, maybe another music video.

Are we likely to see you in the UK again in future?

Yes, very likely.

Where can we find your music, and keep up to date with all things White Reaper?

YouTube. (White Reaper’s recent music videos can be found on the Polyvinyl YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrEKPrJOkTbaOxeZJ8q6Dew – ed.)
